About Garrick National Park

Garrick National Park, located in southwestern Washington near the mouth of the Columbia River, encompasses approximately 2,950 acres of coastal forest, wetlands, and sandy beaches along the Pacific Ocean. The park features a mix of Sitka spruce, western hemlock, and Douglas fir forests interspersed with marshes and tide pools, providing habitats for a variety of bird species, marine life, and mammals such as elk and river otters. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American groups, notably the Chinook and Cowlitz tribes, who utilized the abundant coastal and river resources. The park preserves not only natural habitats but also traces of early settler activities like fishing and logging. Visitors to Garrick can enjoy hiking along more than 10 miles of family-friendly trails that offer views of the ocean, estuaries, and dense old-growth forest. Popular stops include the Garrick Beach area with its tide pools teeming with sea stars and anemones, and the park’s estuary overlooks for bird watching. Recreational opportunities include wildlife viewing, tide pooling, photography, and beachcombing. The serene environment and less crowded trails make Garrick a favored destination for those seeking coastal calmness combined with forest adventure. Accessibility to the park is straightforward from State Route 101, with parking and picnic facilities available. The park's natural diversity and moderate climate make it an inviting spot year-round.
